Most women will go through pregnancy and birth at some point in their life. This is an extremely important time in your life and one where you really deserve the best support you can get. There are so many fundamental reasons you should exercise correctly and move your body during this period and it is vital that it is done in a safe and controlled manner with the support from an appropriately qualified trainer. It is such a common fear and a myth that you shouldn’t exercise whilst pregnant!
In its basic form exercise through pregnancy should aim to help you maintain your strength and fitness if you exercise regularly already, or gradually build strength and fitness if you are new to exercise. Exercise during pregnancy will help build your stamina and endurance to prepare your body for birth and help to aid the healing process afterwards. Your mental health and wellbeing, better circulation, reductions in common pregnancy complaints, increased body awareness, enhanced self-image and confidence and improved sleep patterns are just a few of the many benefits good exercise and nutrition will do for you, your baby and your family.
Each trimester is very different. Understanding the different ways that training should be adapted throughout your pregnancy and after birth, along with the importance in the role of nutrition during pregnancy and after birth, is exceptionally important.
Your exercise programme will incorporate pelvic floor work, a focus on maintaining core strength and adapting this as you progress through each trimester, learning breathing techniques to engage the deep core muscles and you will be provided with safe resistance training and cardio based exercise adaptations for each trimester and into your postnatal phase.
There is so much emphasis on bouncing back straight away and losing baby weight as fast as possible and I know so many women want to “get my pre pregnancy body back,” but you must consider your body is now in a whole new stage of its life. Your body has just housed and grown a human and now you need to focus on recovering correctly, building your strength and adapting and improving function of your ‘new’ body!
There is no harm in wanting to lose any extra fat you may have gained, but you need to remember this trimester after birth is a delicate precious time, you must consider the changes your body is still going through and the requirements it needs. You still have elevated levels of the relaxin hormone circulating that can lead to injury if you do not make sure exercise selection is suitable, your core will still be weak, you may have ab separation and if you are breastfeeding you need to consider eating enough to maintain milk supply. This is why making sure you work with somebody who is qualified is key for your postnatal recovery.
